Six people have been killed in a shooting at a Walmart in Virginia

Six people were killed and the shooter was also dead after a mass shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, city officials said early Wednesday. The shooting occurred at the Walmart Supercenter and was reported to police at 10 p.m., Chesapeake Police Department Officer Leo Kosinski said in a briefing following the incident. Officers responded to the store around 10:12 p.m. and found the victims and evidence of a shooting.

Kosinski told reporters he wasn’t sure how the shooter died, saying that he didn’t think the gunman was shot by police. It wasn’t clear if any of the victims or the attacker were employees. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Washington confirmed they are responding to the shooting.

Investigators are still trying to uncover a motive for the shooting, but they believe the shooter was an employee or former employee of the store who opened fire on other employees in a break room.

Five patients are currently being treated at Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. No update is currently available on their conditions.

Chesapeake city officials have asked people to stay away from the store while they investigate the situation. They posted a message on Twitter, saying, “Our first responders are well-trained and prepared to respond; please give them space to do so.”

The Chesapeake Conference Center has been set up as a reunification center for those affected by the incident, city officials said. They are asking that only immediate family and emergency contacts for people who were in the store go to the center.
